Reading Passages with Your Child
In planning a workable home practice that parents can do to help their children with learning to break the code of English and understand what they hear and read, I would choose a few tasks to begin.Supply the parents with a list of reading books or short passages that are on their child’s instructional reading level. WHAT teachers SAY

Sasha is a master at instructing how to explicitly teach letter sounds and the proper articulation for each sound. I was introduced to her Vowel Staircase for teaching the short vowels, and it is a true gem of a tool! I have never had my class learn their short vowel sound so quickly and with automaticity! Another wonderful aspect of the course was learning how to correct a student’s mistake in reading or spelling, with the student being an active participant in the process.
Throughout the lessons, Sasha provides excellent resources, games and activities to easily find and use. This course was all I had hoped it would be in helping me get started implementing SOR in my classroom.
Thank you, Sasha!

the act of writing a word or a sentence
Perhaps the most important thing to realize about writing is that it is such a multi-dimensional act. Here is a list of some, but not all, of the skills that comprise writing:- Writing letters accurately and automatically- Spelling individual words- Understanding the meanings of words and using the correct words and tone to fit the written piece – ask yourself: “Am I to use informal, conversational vocabulary or more formal academic vocabulary?” “What are the specialized vocabulary words that should be included in this written piece?” Read More

About me

Sasha Borenstein has worked in the fields of Special Education and Literacy for 50 years as a classroom teacher, remediation specialist, diagnostician, college instructor and educational consultant. She also founded and directed a clinic in Los Angeles, the Kelter Center, for 36 years. Sasha’s training began at Columbia Teachers’ College, but she has continued learning about learning and literacy throughout her career: Patricia LIndamood, Dr. Mel Levine, Maureen Aumann, Step up to Writing, working with the Language! Program and Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy, to name a few. Sasha recently has brought out the second edition of her book, How to Teach Reading and Spelling, Bringing the Science of Reading into the Classroom, and has begun again to train and mentor teachers in this area. The training focuses on what to teach (the scope and sequence of SOR literacy), how to teach this body of knowledge (Structured Literacy) and how to develop the problem - solving skills of the participating teachers and their students so they can become independent, thoughtful, self-correcting linguists.
